Another Accident in America

More Rides Shut Down In Wake Of Six Flags Accident

(June 23, 2007)--Two amusement park companies have shut down a total of eight thrill rides similar to one in Kentucky where an accident cost a teen-age girl both feet.

State inspectors are at Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom to examine the Superman Tower of Power, where the accident happened Thursday.

The ride lifts passengers 177 feet straight up, then drops them straight down at better than 50 miles-an-hour.

Thursday, a cable broke slicing the 13-year-old's legs just above the ankles.

Both Six Flags and Cedar Fair Entertainment company have shut down similar rides at other parks.

The Swiss company that made all the rides notes it didn't supply all the parts.

The Kentucky ride had passed its inspections and a Six Flags spokeswoman says millions of people have safely ridden it and similar rides at the chain's other locations.

Business was still brisk at Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom Friday, despite the closed thrill ride.

How frightening and painful! Kentucky Kingdom has had a lot of bad luck with malfunctioning rides over the years, a pity because it's a great park. The Kentucky State Fair always has a heap of permanent attractions as Six Flags is on the grounds but they still get in a heap of carnival rides as well. I sure wouldn't mind attending that Fair!

No body knows 100% but we can presume that when the cable snapped it swung down and wrapped around her ankle and as the ride dropped the cable sliced through it. I don't know if thats what happened, but that seems to be the most logical explanation.

Hurricane's sounds like a plausable explanation, unless the whip effect from the cable itself did the severing, but this is unlikely.

Absolutely a freak accident, and one of the most gruesome non-fatality incidents to date.
